Today, everybody using Twitter, Facebook, or an online Forum is a publisher. As such we need to start paying more attention to what we say online, particularly when talking about others. This January the Irish laws of Libel and Slander were dropped, replaced with a general law of Defamation. This we we spoke about the new law.
We were joined by Darragh Doyle or boards.ie and Marie McGonagle, Lecturer in Media Law at NUIG. Marie was also involved in the reformation of Irish Defamation law.

Marie McGonagle is a Law Lecturer at NUI Galway, specialising in Media Law. She was involved in the reformation process for the new Defamation Act, 2009.
We spoke with Marie about the new Act in light of online communities and bloggers. We asked if the new law would give the Garda wider search and seizure powers for those found guilty of Blasphemy. We also posed the question, “Is a blog a periodical?”
